What are the different burn types?
Burns are measured in "Degrees" of First, Second, and Third.
• First degree burn - This is the least severe burn and only involves the outer layer of skin (the epidermis). The skin will often be somewhat red and painful. Sunburns are usually first degree burns.
• Second degree burn - Second degree burns occur when the epidermis has been burned through and the second layer of skin (the dermis) has also been burned. These are much more painful than first degree burns and are usually accompanied swelling and blisters.
• Third degree burn - The most severe type of burns, third degree burns occur when all the layers of the skin are burned through and the burn has reached the underlying tissue. Skin will often become dry and leathery, and frequently black, white or brown in color. This type of burn requires medical attention.

Honestly, how common are burn injuries?
Burns are a very common injury and can occur most anywhere. Some of the usual suspects are:
• In the kitchen: hot pans, boiling water, etc (and how many kids hear the panicked "NO" too late as they're reaching up to the stove?)
• Food/Drink (spilled coffee, hot grease, cheese that clung to the foil of the lasagna pan and drizzled painfully over your hand)
• Garages
• Vehicle/motorcycle exhaust pipes
• BBQ grills
• Clothes irons
• Hair irons
• Campfires
• Wood stoves & fireplaces

Absolutely. Not only would the healing time have been shorter, he would have had nearly instant pain relief and less scarring.

What are common safety measures one should take to prevent getting burned?
• Turn pot handles away from the front of the stove.
• Lift pot lids so the steam escapes away from you, not toward you.
• Keep all towels and pot holders away from the stove.
• Keep your stove and oven clean and free of grease. Built-up grease can catch fire.
• Smother grease fires. Do NOT throw water on grease fires.
• Do not dangle appliance cords over the edge of the counter.
• Do not cook uncracked eggs in a microwave; they will explode.
• Do not use electrical appliances (hair dryers, shavers) around water.
• Check water temperature of bath water before placing a child or yourself into the tub.
• Do not place flammable items close to the fireplace while in use.
• Maintain a sturdy metal fire screen in front of your fireplace.
• Keep garage area clear of piles of rags, stacks of papers, and other combustible materials.
• Store kerosene in an approved blue and white container that is clearly labeled.
• Store gasoline in a clearly labeled, tightly sealed, red, safety-type can.
• Gasoline and other flammable liquids should not be used for cleaning clothes, furnishings, or floors.
• Store gasoline in a well-vented area.
• Paint, varnish and other flammable items need to be stored in tightly closed containers according to manufacturer's instructions.
• If your garage is attached to your house, make sure the entrance door is a fire-rated door that is kept closed.
• Keep clothes dryers free of lint build-up.
• Do not store gasoline in the house.
• Adjust the hot water heater to a safe temperature.
• Maintain gas grills according to safety instructions.
• Do not burn grills under overhangs.
• Be aware that sunlight can cause surfaces to get extremely hot. You can easily obtain a contact burn from walking on the patio or cement.
• Do not let children walk outside on hot surfaces without shoes.
• Be aware of hot surfaces on chairs prior to sitting. These surfaces can cause contact burns.
• Do not open a hot radiator on your car.
